Ayurvedic Hair Powders: Pure Henna Side Effects

Pure henna has a reputation for being risk-free, unlike chemical “black henna.” Yet one population remains exposed to a real, documented side effect: G6PD-deficient infants.

G6PD deficiency is more common in certain populations (Mediterranean, African, Asian, Middle Eastern) and is screened for at birth in several countries where it is common. These cases involve direct skin application on an infant, a traditional practice in some cultures (ritual newborn henna) — not an adult using a hair powder on their own scalp, whose risk is of an entirely different order.

Other, far more common possible side effects

  • Temporarily drier or rougher hair: pure henna deposits a film on the hair fiber, which can feel rough to some people, especially with repeated application without an accompanying moisturizing treatment.
  • Unexpected color on chemically colored hair: henna can react unpredictably over an existing tint base, hence the classic recommendation of a strand test before a full application.
  • Temporary staining of the scalp or forehead skin: harmless, it fades within a few days.
  • Mild skin irritation in people with a sensitive scalp, independent of any PPD allergy.
