Bhringaraj Oil: How Much to Use and How Often to Apply It

Too little and it barely touches the scalp; too often and it just weighs hair down. Here are the quantity and frequency guidelines for bhringaraj oil.

Our reference article bhringaraj oil covers the traditional uses of this bhringaraj (Eclipta alba) macerate in sesame or coconut oil. This article details, as with the sister oils brahmi and amla, the quantity and frequency genuinely suited to hair length.

What quantity depending on hair length?

Hair lengthIndicative quantityApplication zone
Short1 to 2 teaspoonsScalp, with a light pass on the lengths
Medium2 to 3 teaspoonsScalp and lengths
Long or thick3 to 4 teaspoons, or moreScalp first, then lengths and ends in a second pass

These guidelines are indicative and should be adjusted downward for an already oily scalp, or upward for particularly dry ends.

How often should a bhringaraj oil bath be done?

  • Normal to dry scalp: once a week, in a gentle massage before shampooing;
  • Oily scalp: space applications out to every 10 to 15 days, limiting the quantity to the roots;
  • Occasional course (period of increased shedding): up to twice a week for a few weeks, before returning to a weekly pace.

Our article bhringaraj oil: how long to leave it on details the optimal leave-in time, from 30 minutes to a full night depending on how well the scalp tolerates it.

How long before judging a result?

On hair softness and shine, a cosmetic effect is often noticeable after a few regular oil baths. On growth or density, the timeframe is considerably longer. A study published in 2008 in Archives of Dermatological Research by Roy and colleagues found, in rats treated topically with Eclipta alba extracts, hair regrowth starting earlier than in the control group (see the study on Google Scholar). This result, obtained in an animal model, does not translate directly into a precise number of weeks in humans, but it confirms what the most experienced users report: count several months of regular weekly use before assessing an effect on density, never a few isolated applications.

Applying the right quantity in practice

Warming the oil slightly before application improves its spread and avoids using more than necessary. Start by massaging the scalp with a small quantity, then distribute the excess along the lengths with your hands: this method limits waste and the excess oil that unnecessarily weighs hair down.

Precautions

These quantity guidelines do not replace a preliminary skin test, especially with a first use or a sensitive scalp. Precautions are detailed in our article bhringaraj oil: dangers and precautions. General precautions are gathered in our safety and precautions guide.

Your questions about bhringaraj oil

How many spoonfuls of bhringaraj oil should I use per oil bath?

Count 1 to 2 teaspoons for short hair, 2 to 3 for medium-length hair, and 3 to 4 or more for long or thick hair, applied in two passes.

How often should bhringaraj oil be applied to the scalp?

Once a week suits most scalps. Space it out to every 10 to 15 days for an oily scalp, or temporarily intensify to twice a week during a period of increased shedding.

How long before seeing an effect on hair growth?

Count several months of regular weekly use. A study in rats showed faster regrowth with plant extracts, but this animal result does not guarantee a precise timeframe in humans.

Should I use more bhringaraj oil if my hair is very dry?

A slightly more generous quantity on the lengths can help, but it is generally better to leave the oil on longer than to increase the total quantity applied in a single sitting.
