How to Store Gotu Kola: Powder, Leaves and Capsules

Green leaf powder or standardized capsules: gotu kola keeps like most herb powders, but with a particular sensitivity to light. Here are the habits that best preserve its quality.

Gotu kola leaf powder keeps in an opaque, airtight jar, away from light, heat and moisture, like most leaf-herb powders. Standardized capsules, in their original, well-resealed packaging, are a little more stable. Properly stored, these forms hold their quality for 6 to 12 months after opening.

This is a practical companion to our gotu kola in Ayurveda page and our how to choose gotu kola guide.

Why is light the main enemy?

Gotu kola is a leaf herb, rich in oxidation-sensitive compounds — triterpenes such as asiaticoside and madecassoside — which are what make the herb valuable. Prolonged exposure to light, especially direct sun, speeds up their degradation and browns the powder, which loses its characteristic gray-green color and turns a dull yellowish shade. Three simple precautions limit this:

  • An opaque container, in tinted glass or metal rather than a clear pouch left in view;
  • A closed cupboard, away from a sun-exposed window;
  • An airtight seal after each use, to limit contact with humid air.

What research on storing herb powders documents

A study by Sharma, Kabra, Kabra and Baghel (2016), published in the Journal of Ayurveda and Integrative Medicine (see the study on Google Scholar), shows that dried herb powders progressively degrade depending on storage conditions — light, moisture and temperature mattering more than the simple passage of time. For gotu kola powder, this translates concretely into the rules above: an opaque, airtight jar, a cool, dry cupboard, and a scoop that is always dry.

How long does gotu kola keep?

FormStorageIndicative shelf lifeSign of lost quality
Leaf powderOpaque, airtight jar, away from light6 to 12 monthsYellowish color, weaker smell
Standardized capsulesOriginal box, temperate cupboard12 to 24 monthsRare, check the expiry date
Gotu kola oil (topical use)Away from light and heat6 to 12 months after openingRancid smell

These are indicative benchmarks: an aged gotu kola isn't necessarily dangerous, but a discolored or odorless powder has lost its practical value.

Should gotu kola powder be refrigerated?

No, it isn't necessary and can even be counterproductive: as with most herb powders, going from the fridge to room temperature creates condensation when the jar is opened, which encourages unwanted moisture. A temperate cupboard, neither too warm nor too cold, away from light, remains the best option.

Precautions

Poorly stored gotu kola mainly loses quality and pleasantness of use, which is not in itself a major safety issue. The real precaution with gotu kola concerns first the choice of product at purchase, detailed in how to tell real gotu kola, and the use of the herb itself: caution with liver treatments or sedatives, and professional advice recommended during pregnancy and breastfeeding. For the full set of precautions, see the safety and precautions guide.

Your questions about how to store gotu kola

How long does an opened jar of gotu kola powder keep?

As a guide, 6 to 12 months in a well-sealed, opaque jar, kept dry and away from light. A powder exposed to light loses its characteristic color and smell faster.

Why has my gotu kola powder turned yellow?

It signals overly prolonged exposure to light or air, which degrades the herb’s active compounds. An opaque jar kept in a closed cupboard limits this.

Should gotu kola be refrigerated?

No, neither the powder nor the capsules. Going from the fridge to room temperature creates condensation at each opening, which encourages moisture unwanted for a herb powder.

Do gotu kola capsules keep better than the loose powder?

Yes, generally 12 to 24 months in their original, well-resealed packaging, versus 6 to 12 months for the loose powder exposed to air with every opening.
