Bakuchiol: Dosage and How to Use It in Skincare
Concentration, frequency, timing of application: here is how to correctly use a bakuchiol serum — and why the whole bakuchi seed has no safe "dosage" at home.
The dosage of cosmetic bakuchiol is thought of in terms of the finished product's concentration and how often it is applied, not in grams as with a plant taken internally. Commercial products generally use a concentration of 0.5 to 1%, the range studied in the reference clinical trial on this molecule extracted from the seed of bakuchi.
Note: this article concerns cosmetic isolated bakuchiol exclusively. The whole bakuchi seed, in traditional internal or external use, has no safe home dosage — see our article bakuchi: dangers before considering such use.
Which concentration to choose?
| Concentration | Recommended use | Note |
|---|---|---|
| 0.3 to 0.5% | Sensitive skin, first-time use | Cautious starting point for assessing tolerance |
| 0.5 to 1% | Everyday use, the reference clinical trial's concentration | Range studied by Dhaliwal and colleagues (2019, British Journal of Dermatology) |
| Above 1% | Less standardized, poorly documented | No additional benefit demonstrated; higher irritation risk |
Always check the percentage stated on the label: a product that does not state its bakuchiol concentration cannot be placed against the available data.
The reference clinical trial's protocol
The randomized double-blind trial by Dhaliwal and colleagues, published in 2019 in the British Journal of Dermatology and already cited in our base article, used a 0.5% bakuchiol cream applied twice a day (morning and evening) for 12 weeks in 44 participants, with results on wrinkles and hyperpigmentation comparable to the retinol group (see the study on Google Scholar). This is the most solidly documented protocol to date, even though many commercial products recommend a single evening application, which remains a reasonable choice for long-term daily use.
How to introduce bakuchiol gradually
- Weeks 1 and 2: one evening application, every other day, on clean, dry skin;
- Weeks 3 and 4: move to a daily evening application if the skin tolerates it well;
- Beyond that: option to move to two applications a day (morning and evening), as in the clinical trial's protocol, consistently paired with daily sun protection.
Allow at least 8 to 12 weeks before judging the effect on wrinkles and complexion, in line with the duration of the reference trial — a timeline also detailed in our article bakuchiol reviews.
Where it fits in a routine
Bakuchiol is generally applied after cleansing and before moisturizer, on dry skin. It pairs well with vitamin C (preferably in the morning) and hyaluronic acid, but it is best to avoid layering it directly with other strong exfoliating actives (retinol, high-concentration fruit acids) on the same evening, to limit the risk of cumulative over-irritation.
Precautions
This guidance concerns isolated cosmetic bakuchiol exclusively, at the usual concentrations found in finished products. The whole bakuchi seed, in traditional internal or external use, has no established safe home dose and carries documented risks of liver toxicity and severe photosensitization — see our article bakuchi: dangers. Daily sun protection remains recommended with bakuchiol, as a precaution. Pregnant or breastfeeding women: seek medical advice before any use. For the site's full set of safety guidance, see our safety and precautions guide.
Your questions about bakuchiol
What concentration of bakuchiol should you start with?
A concentration of 0.3 to 0.5% is a good starting point for sensitive skin. The 0.5 to 1% range matches the one studied in the 2019 reference clinical trial, which showed efficacy comparable to retinol.
Should bakuchiol be applied morning and evening?
The reference clinical trial's protocol used two applications a day, but a single evening application remains a reasonable and widely followed choice for long-term daily use, especially while introducing it.
How long before you see an effect with bakuchiol?
Allow at least 8 to 12 weeks of regular use, in line with the 12-week duration of the reference clinical trial. Judging results before that point is not representative.
Can bakuchiol be combined with other actives?
It generally pairs well with vitamin C and hyaluronic acid. It is best, however, to avoid layering it on the same evening with other strong exfoliants such as retinol, to limit the risk of cumulative irritation.
