Bakuchi (Bakuchiol): Plant, Traditional Uses and Precautions

Bakuchi refers to the traditional Ayurvedic seed, while bakuchiol is the isolated molecule sold as a natural retinol alternative — two uses that should never be confused where safety is concerned.

Bakuchi (Psoralea corylifolia), sometimes called babchi, is a small black seed from the Ayurvedic pharmacopoeia, traditionally used on the skin and scalp, applied locally as an oil or a powder. Its most-studied compound, bakuchiol, is today isolated and marketed in cosmetics as a natural alternative to retinol.

Be careful, though, not to confuse the two uses: cosmetic bakuchiol is a purified molecule, dosed at regulated concentrations and lab-tested, while the seed or powder of bakuchi in traditional use contains a cocktail of compounds — including psoralens — associated with real, documented risks of liver toxicity and skin photosensitization. This guide clearly separates the two.

Bakuchi, bakuchiol: what exactly are we talking about?

Bakuchi is the name given to the seed of Psoralea corylifolia, a plant native to India used for centuries externally on the skin and scalp, and more rarely internally in certain complex traditional formulations. Bakuchiol, on the other hand, is a phenolic compound naturally present in the plant's seed and leaves; it is this isolated molecule, not the whole seed, that goes into the creams and serums sold in the West in recent years as a "natural alternative to retinol."

This distinction matters for safety: the whole seed also contains furanocoumarins (including psoralen itself), photosensitizing molecules that have nothing to do with bakuchiol and that explain much of the caution detailed below.

Traditional Ayurvedic uses of bakuchi

In Ayurvedic tradition, bakuchi seed is best known for external application on skin depigmentation patches, in traditional approaches referenced for vitiligo and sometimes for psoriasis. Bakuchi oil is also massaged into the scalp, with tradition attributing to it a favorable effect on hair regrowth and premature graying — an indication resting on traditional use rather than on solid clinical data to date.

These traditional uses historically rely on the plant's psoralen-driven photosensitizing action, combined with controlled sun exposure: this is exactly the same pharmacological principle as PUVA phototherapy (psoralen + UVA) practiced in dermatology, where psoralen is administered in a supervised setting before a measured UVA dose delivered in a medical office. At home, without that medical framework, the same property becomes a risk rather than a treatment.

Cosmetic bakuchiol versus retinol: what does research show?

This is the most commonly asked question about bakuchiol: is it really comparable to retinol? A double-blind randomized clinical trial led by Dhaliwal and colleagues, published in 2019 in the British Journal of Dermatology, compared a 0.5% bakuchiol cream (applied twice daily) with a 0.5% retinol cream (applied once daily) in 44 participants over 12 weeks. Both actives reduced wrinkles and hyperpigmentation linked to photoaging to a comparable degree, with no statistically significant difference between the two groups — but retinol users reported more flaking and stinging than bakuchiol users (see the study on Google Scholar).

This result, drawn from a small sample and worth comparing with caution, explains bakuchiol's marketing success: comparable efficacy, better skin tolerance, and the absence of the photosensitization that retinol itself causes. It concerns, however, the isolated, purified molecule, at a precise, regulated concentration — not the whole bakuchi seed or an unstandardized homemade oil.

The real risks: liver toxicity and photosensitization

This is the central point of caution in this article. The seed and traditional preparations made from Psoralea corylifolia have been linked, in the medical literature, to cases of sometimes severe liver toxicity. A case review published in 2019 in BMC Complementary Medicine and Therapies by Li and colleagues describes a case of acute liver failure in a patient treated for vitiligo with a Chinese tablet containing Fructus Psoraleae, and lists several other cases of liver injury reported in the literature in connection with this plant (see the study on Google Scholar).

On the skin side, a case published in 2024 in Contact Dermatitis by Mehta and colleagues reports a severe phototoxic reaction in a child with vitiligo after bakuchi seeds were applied to the skin followed by sun exposure — marked burns and blistering on the treated areas (see the study on Google Scholar). This type of reaction is explained directly by the seed's psoralens, the same compounds that make PUVA phototherapy effective under supervised medical use — and dangerous under unsupervised sun exposure.

How to use bakuchi and bakuchiol safely

For everyday cosmetic use, favor a finished product containing isolated bakuchiol at a concentration stated on the label (generally between 0.5 and 1%), rather than an unstandardized homemade bakuchi seed oil. Here are a few practical, indicative guidelines:

  • In cosmetics, bakuchiol is applied in the evening, like retinol, on clean, dry skin; daily sun protection remains recommended the next day, as with any exfoliating or renewing active.
  • After any skin application of bakuchi seed oil or powder (traditional use), strictly avoid any sun or UV exposure on the treated area for at least 24 to 48 hours, due to the risk of burns and pigmented patches.
  • Internal use of bakuchi (powder, decoction, tablet) should never be undertaken without supervision from a qualified practitioner, given the liver risk reported in the literature.
  • For everyday skin concerns (uneven tone, skin inflammation), better-documented plants such as turmeric or neem used externally remain more widely studied traditional options.

Precautions

Bakuchi is not without consequence: the whole seed and its traditional preparations contain photosensitizing psoralens and have been linked to rare but documented cases of severe liver damage. No sun exposure should follow a skin application of bakuchi seed or oil, and internal use should be avoided outside of medical supervision. Isolated cosmetic bakuchiol, at the usual concentrations found in finished products, has a different and generally more favorable tolerance profile, but it is in no way a treatment for a skin disease and never replaces a dermatologist's opinion for vitiligo, psoriasis or any other skin condition.
