Black Seed and Pregnancy: What the Very Recent Offspring Study Shows

A pinch of black seed in a dish raises no identified concern, but a very recent study on consumption during gestation calls for caution with concentrated forms.

Black seed (kalonji, Nigella sativa) is best avoided in concentrated therapeutic use during pregnancy, as a precaution. Our black seed dangers article already mentioned this for the oil and standardized extracts. A study published in 2025 brings new data directly on gestation, which confirms and refines this caution.

What does the 2025 study show about offspring?

A study by Laadraoui and colleagues, published in 2025 in Birth Defects Research, assessed the effect of Nigella sativa consumption during gestation in mice on the fertility, morphology and behavior of the offspring (see on Google Scholar). The results are mixed: some physical growth parameters of the offspring were favored, but the study also reports disruptions in neuromotor development in the pups, with a delay observed in the acquisition of certain reflexes. This is a clear signal that active consumption of the herb during gestation can influence development, in a way that is neither uniformly positive nor negligible.

An earlier study, conducted by Salarinia and colleagues in 2016 in the Avicenna Journal of Phytomedicine, assessed the safety of a black-seed vaginal pessary (Phytovagex) administered to pregnant rats during the first half of gestation, with no significant effect observed on gestation length, litter size or birth weight (see on Google Scholar). The difference between these two findings illustrates the distinction already made in our black seed dangers article: route of administration, form, and dose radically change the risk profile.

Summary by situation

SituationRecommendation
Seed used in cooking, modest amountNo identified warning sign at this occasional level of exposure.
Black seed oil or concentrated extract, internal useAvoid during pregnancy, given effects on offspring development reported at active doses in animals.
BreastfeedingSame caution for concentrated forms, insufficient data.
Allergy to RanunculaceaeContraindication that also applies during pregnancy; see black seed dangers.

What to do about wanting to boost immunity during pregnancy?

The urge to "boost immunity" with a natural remedy is common in pregnancy, but it does not justify turning to a concentrated black seed oil or extract without medical advice. A midwife or doctor can suggest measures suited and safe for this period.

Precautions

This article complements our Ayurveda and Pregnancy guide, which lists herbs and practices to avoid during this period. For general precautions applicable to all herbs on this site, see our safety and precautions guide. When in doubt, it is best to keep black seed to its usual culinary use and speak with a healthcare professional before any concentrated course.

Your questions about black seed and pregnancy

Can black seed be eaten in cooking during pregnancy?

Yes, in small amounts as a spice, no warning sign is identified at that occasional level of exposure.

What does the 2025 study show about black seed and pregnancy?

In mice, Nigella sativa consumption during gestation favored some offspring growth parameters but also disrupted neuromotor development in the pups, with a delay in certain reflexes.

Is black seed oil dangerous during pregnancy?

It is discouraged for concentrated internal use, as a precaution, consistent with recent data on offspring development at active doses.

Doesn’t an older study offer reassurance on black seed in pregnancy?

A 2016 study on a black-seed vaginal pessary showed no effect on gestation, but it involved a very specific route and dose, not transposable to a concentrated oral intake.

Is black seed discouraged during breastfeeding?

For concentrated forms (oil, extract), yes, as a precaution, given insufficient safety data.
