Kutaja Dosage: How Much to Take and How to Use It
Powder, decoction or capsules: the right kutaja dosage varies by form, but is always meant for short-term use. Guidance only, and never a substitute for professional advice.
There is no single dosage for kutaja (Holarrhena antidysenterica): the dose depends on the form used. What sets this herb apart from other pillars of the Ayurvedic pharmacopoeia is the deliberately short duration of its use: unlike ongoing herbs such as ashwagandha or triphala, kutaja isn't meant for a long course. The guidance below is for reference only and doesn't replace reading the product label or asking for advice if in doubt.
Main available forms and usual doses
| Form | Usual indicative dose | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Bark powder (churna) | 1 to 3 g per day, in 2 doses | In warm water, after meals — very bitter taste |
| Capsules or tablets | Per label (often 300 to 500 mg) | The simplest option to avoid the bark's taste |
| Decoction (kashaya) | 1 tsp of powder per 250 ml | Simmer 10 minutes, strain, drink warm |
What time of day should you take it?
Tradition recommends taking kutaja after meals rather than on an empty stomach, which limits the digestive discomfort its very astringent taste can cause. Splitting it into two doses, morning and evening, is the most common practice for an acute diarrhea episode.
How long should you continue taking it?
As detailed in our article kutaja: how long to work, tradition reserves kutaja for short episodes, from a few days to one or two weeks maximum. This matches the duration observed in the reference clinical study by Singh, K.P., published in 1986 in Ancient Science of Life (vol. 5, no. 4, p. 228-231), which followed patients treated for infectious digestive disorders over a limited period (see the study on Google Scholar). An extended ongoing course is not this herb's traditional use.
Should the dose be adjusted to the severity of the episode?
No: exceeding the guideline dose doesn't speed up the effect and raises the risk of constipation from excessive astringency. If the episode doesn't improve at the usual dose after 48 to 72 hours, the right response isn't a higher dose but a doctor's visit, as detailed in our article kutaja: dangers and precautions.
What if you get a mild side effect?
Mild constipation toward the end of treatment is possible, consistent with the astringent effect being sought: it usually resolves on its own once you stop. If nausea from the very bitter taste is an issue, favor capsules over powder diluted in water.
Precautions
Following the guideline doses doesn't remove the general precautions specific to this herb: kutaja is not recommended during pregnancy and breastfeeding, or in children without pediatric advice, and should never replace medical advice for diarrhea that is feverish, prolonged, or comes with blood in the stool. For full guidelines, see our safety and precautions guide.
Your questions about kutaja dosage
What is the usual kutaja dose?
Guidance ranges from 1 to 3 g of powder per day in 2 doses to 300-500 mg in capsules, depending on the form. The powder has a very bitter taste, often better tolerated as capsules.
Should kutaja be taken before or after meals?
Preferably after meals: this limits the digestive discomfort its very astringent taste can cause on an empty stomach.
How long can you take kutaja for?
Tradition reserves it for short episodes, from a few days to one or two weeks maximum. It is not an ongoing-course herb, unlike triphala.
Can you increase the kutaja dose if diarrhea persists?
No. A higher dose doesn't speed up the effect and raises the risk of constipation. If there's no improvement after 48 to 72 hours, a doctor's visit is better than a higher dose.
Does kutaja cause constipation?
Mild constipation toward the end of treatment is possible, tied to the bark's astringent effect. It usually resolves once you stop, which is expected to be short.
