Shankhpushpi Dosage: How Much to Take and How to Take It

Traditional syrup, powder in warm milk, or standardized capsules: here is how shankhpushpi is taken, with dose guidance from preclinical studies and their limits.

Shankhpushpi (most often Convolvulus pluricaulis) has no large-scale clinical trial in humans that would set a reference dose. The guidelines below rest on traditional use and preclinical studies, to be read with the caution they require.

The traditional forms and their uses

FormTraditional useTiming
Powder (churna)1 to 3 g per day, in warm water or milkMorning or evening depending on the goal
Traditional syrupA few milliliters, per the product's labelMost often in the evening
Decoction or teaOccasional, as a short courseEnd of day

What preclinical studies suggest about dose

Studies comparing different botanical sources sold as shankhpushpi identified a maximal nootropic and anxiolytic activity at a dose of 100 mg per kilogram in animals, while another protocol using a 500 mg/kg ethanolic extract showed, in a maze anxiety test, a markedly longer exploration time than untreated animals (see the study on Google Scholar). This data, obtained in animals, does not translate directly into human milligrams: it mainly indicates that an intermediate dose, neither too low nor excessive, appears most effective in these models — one more argument for sticking to traditional amounts rather than seeking to take more.

One of the main limits noted in recent literature is the absence, to date, of a large randomized clinical trial in humans on anxiety or memory with this herb: available research remains overwhelmingly preclinical.

How long before judging an effect?

As with other mind herbs, count on several weeks of regular use before assessing any effect: this is not a fast-acting herb. Tradition recommends reassessing after 4 to 6 weeks, together with a professional if the health context calls for it.

Precautions

As detailed in our article shankhpushpi dangers and precautions, combining it with sedatives or anxiolytics should be discussed with a doctor, as a precaution against a risk of potentiation. Pregnancy and breastfeeding are best avoided for lack of sufficient data, and the botanical variability of products sold under this name means checking the exact species on the label. For general guidance, see our safety and precautions guide.

Your questions about shankhpushpi dosage

What is the usual dose of shankhpushpi?

For guidance only, 1 to 3 g of powder per day, or a traditional syrup per the product label. No human clinical trial sets a precise reference dose for this herb.

How long should shankhpushpi be taken to see an effect?

Like other mind herbs, it is used over a course of several weeks. Reassessing after 4 to 6 weeks of regular use is advisable, together with a professional if needed.

Do studies on shankhpushpi allow a dose to be set?

Preclinical animal studies suggest an intermediate dose is most effective in those models, but they do not translate directly into a human dose. No large clinical trial exists yet on this herb.

Can shankhpushpi be combined with ashwagandha?

These two herbs target similar goals through different traditional pathways and are sometimes combined. Any combination should be validated with a professional, especially with an ongoing sedative treatment.

How to choose a quality shankhpushpi?

Check that the label states the exact botanical species (most often Convolvulus pluricaulis) and, ideally, a certificate of analysis. The wide variability of products sold under this name makes this check essential.
