What the scientific research says

Research has mostly looked at each herb separately, not at the pairing as such — an important point to keep in mind. On vasaka, a study by Dhuley, published in 1999 in the Journal of Ethnopharmacology, found that an orally administered extract of Adhatoda vasica produced an antitussive effect comparable to codeine against cough induced by inhaled irritants in guinea pigs, whereas by intravenous route its activity remained markedly weaker than codeine's see the study on Google Scholar.

On tulsi, a study by Vinaya, Kudagi, Kamdod and Swamy, published in 2017 in the International Journal of Basic & Clinical Pharmacology, compared a 200 mg capsule of Ocimum sanctum taken twice daily against salbutamol in patients with mild-to-moderate asthma: the authors reported a significant improvement in respiratory parameters, including FEV1 and peak expiratory flow rate, as well as in symptoms, over a one-week period see the study on Google Scholar.

These findings should be read with caution: they come from targeted studies, one conducted in animals, the other in a small human sample using an open-label comparison, and neither examined the vasaka-tulsi pairing itself. They confirm a pharmacological interest consistent with traditional use, without allowing us to conclude that the combination has proven efficacy for general public use.

Vasaka and tulsi are herbs with a long history of traditional use, but their combination is not risk-free for everyone. A few points of caution:

  • vasaka is traditionally discouraged during pregnancy, due to uterine-stimulant properties attributed to it in traditional sources;
  • in young children, concentrated respiratory herbs should only be used under the guidance of a healthcare professional;
