What research shows about contact time
A study by Sudha, Ganesan, Pazhani, Ramamurthy, Nair and Venkatasubramanian, published in 2012 in the Journal of Health, Population and Nutrition, tested copper's antimicrobial effect on water deliberately contaminated with several diarrhea-causing bacteria (including Vibrio cholerae and strains of Escherichia coli) (study available on PubMed Central). After 16 hours of contact at room temperature in a copper vessel, no bacteria were detectable in the water, with a measured copper content of 177 micrograms per liter — well below the World Health Organization's thresholds for drinking water.
This 16-hour duration exceeds the traditional overnight recommendation (6 to 8 hours). It mainly confirms a simple principle: copper's antimicrobial effect depends directly on contact time, not an instant threshold.

In most Western countries, where tap water is already treated and safe to drink, the antimicrobial benefit measured in this study — carried out on deliberately contaminated water — adds no measurable extra safety benefit. The 6-to-8-hour rule therefore remains the right benchmark: enough for the traditional ritual, without needlessly exposing yourself to water with a higher copper load.
Why not just extend the contact time "for more effect"?
Copper is an essential trace element in small amounts, but toxic in excess. The longer water stays in contact with the metal, the more copper ions it picks up, without improving water that was already safe to drink to begin with.
