Neem Oil Dosage: How Much to Use and How Long to Leave It On

How many drops, in what, and how often: dilution guidelines for neem oil so it works effectively without irritating the skin.

Our article neem oil covers its traditional uses, and neem oil dangers explains why it should never be ingested. What remains is a practical question: exactly what dilution to use for each application, and how often to apply it?

Dilution table by use

UseRecommended dilutionFrequency
Skin, targeted area (blemishes)1 to 2 drops in 1 tsp of a neutral carrier oil (coconut, almond)1 to 2 times a day on the affected area
ScalpA few drops added to your usual hair massage oilOnce a week, left on for 30 minutes before shampooing
Body (dry skin, rough areas: elbows, heels)1 drop per tablespoon of coconut oilAs needed, no more than 2 to 3 times a week
Natural repellent (garden/household use)Follow the product's own instructions, outside any cosmetic useNot applicable to skin use

These proportions are only a starting point: on especially sensitive skin, it is better to dilute even further (one drop per two teaspoons of carrier oil) and check tolerance before gradually increasing the concentration.

Why undiluted neem oil should never go straight onto skin

Neem oil is very concentrated in active compounds, particularly azadirachtin and other limonoids, which explains both its traditional effectiveness and its potential to irritate skin when used undiluted. Unlike gentler oils such as sesame or coconut, it was never meant to be applied as-is: diluting it doesn't reduce its usefulness, it simply turns it into a safe practice instead of an unnecessary risk.

How to adjust the dilution gradually

  • First try: start at the lowest dilution in the table above, applied to a small area, with a patch test on the inside of the elbow 24 hours before any wider use;
  • If well tolerated: gradually increase toward the recommended dilution for the intended use;
  • If you notice tingling or redness: dilute further rather than continuing at the same concentration;
  • Sensitive or irritated scalp: cut back to once every two weeks instead of weekly.

Precautions

No dilution, however light, makes internal use of neem oil acceptable: these dilution guidelines apply strictly to external use, never to oral intake, a point covered in detail in neem oil dangers. General safety guidance is available in our safety guide.

Your questions about neem oil dosage

How many drops of neem oil should I use on my face?

One to two drops diluted in a teaspoon of a neutral carrier oil (coconut, almond) are enough for targeted application on a blemish-prone area, once or twice a day.

Can you use undiluted neem oil on the scalp?

It is not recommended: even on the scalp, it is better to dilute a few drops into your usual hair massage oil rather than applying it undiluted, given its high concentration of active compounds.

How often should you use neem oil on hair?

Once a week is generally enough, left on for 30 minutes before shampooing. On a sensitive or irritated scalp, spacing it out to once every two weeks is preferable.

What if the recommended dilution still irritates the skin?

Dilute further, for example one drop per two teaspoons of carrier oil, rather than continuing at the same concentration. If there is no improvement, stop using it on that area.
