Vamana
Therapeutic emesis: the first of the five panchakarma actions, meant to evacuate excess Kapha, strictly reserved for supervised medical settings.
Vamana literally means “vomiting” in Sanskrit. It is the first of the five actions of the great panchakarma cure: emesis induced in a controlled way, using specific decoctions, to evacuate the excess Kapha lodged in the stomach and the respiratory tract — the natural seat of this dosha.
In Ayurvedic logic, each dosha in excess is eliminated through the route closest to its seat: Kapha, heavy and moist, accumulates in the upper part of the body, hence the evacuation “upward.” Tradition indicates vamana for chronic Kapha imbalances: respiratory congestion, persistent heaviness, certain skin disorders. The procedure is never improvised: it requires several days of preparation (internal oleation, sweating therapy), a dedicated day for the act itself under constant supervision, then a gradual reintegration diet.
Let us be clear: vamana is a medical act of institutional Indian Ayurveda, performed in specialized centers by trained practitioners. It carries serious contraindications (pregnancy, cardiac fragility, elderly or weakened individuals…) and must never, under any circumstances, be attempted alone. Outside India, few facilities offer it under proper conditions. Before considering any cure of this kind, read up on the essential precautions and on how a cure actually unfolds in our panchakarma guide.
