Sandalwood Oil: How Long to Diffuse It for an Effect
Sandalwood oil sets the mood within the first minutes of diffusion. But how long should you diffuse it, and does a longer session mean a stronger effect?
The scent effect of sandalwood oil is immediate, within the first few minutes of diffusion. The practical recommendation is to keep each session to 15 to 20 minutes, in a ventilated room, rather than aiming for continuous diffusion in the hope of strengthening a relaxing effect.
Recommended diffusion time
| Use | Duration | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Room diffusion | 15 to 20 minutes | Ventilated room, not repeated continuously all day |
| Massage on temples or neck | One-off application, not repeated during the day | Always diluted |
| Scent on the wrists | Noticeable for several hours | Diluted in a neutral carrier oil |
Why a short exposure rather than a continuous one?
The Heuberger, Hongratanaworakit and Buchbauer study, published in 2006 in Planta Medica, measured detectable physiological effects (pulse, skin conductance, blood pressure) after a single exposure to inhaled sandalwood in healthy volunteers (see the study on Google Scholar). This short exposure protocol is therefore enough to produce a measurable physiological effect: nothing indicates that a longer or continuous diffusion would add any benefit, while it does increase unnecessary exposure to aromatic compounds, particularly for sensitive people.
Immediate effect on atmosphere, uncertain effect on relaxation
As detailed in the feedback gathered in our sandalwood oil reviews article, the olfactory pleasure and the atmosphere sandalwood creates are felt within the first few minutes. A measurable and lasting relaxing effect, on the other hand, remains uncertain: the reference study actually observed a slight physiological activation rather than an objective calming effect, whatever the tested exposure length.
Precautions
These benchmarks concern diffusion and diluted massage. Full precautions, notably for pregnancy, breastfeeding and people with sensitive airways, are detailed in our sandalwood oil dangers article. For general precautions, see our safety and precautions guide.
Your questions about sandalwood oil
How long should you diffuse sandalwood oil?
Short 15-to-20-minute sessions are enough, in a ventilated room. Continuous diffusion brings no demonstrated extra benefit.
How long before you notice an effect with sandalwood oil?
The scent effect and atmosphere are noticeable within the first minutes of diffusion. A measurable and lasting relaxing effect remains uncertain, regardless of exposure length.
Can you diffuse sandalwood oil all night?
This is not recommended. It is better to keep diffusion to short evening sessions rather than continuous use during sleep.
Does a longer diffusion make sandalwood oil more effective?
Nothing suggests that. The reference study measured physiological effects after a single, short exposure, with no demonstrated extra benefit from a longer exposure.
