Vetiver Dosage: How Much to Take and How to Use It
Roots in a jug or diluted essential oil for massage: here are the usual dosage benchmarks for vetiver, the cooling, anti-Pitta plant of summer.
Vetiver (ushira) is mainly used in two forms: dried root for drinking water, and essential oil for massage or perfume. The benchmarks below, for information only, complement our article on vetiver dangers and precautions.
Forms and their usual amounts
| Form | Usual benchmark | Use |
|---|---|---|
| Dried roots for drinking water | A small handful per jug of water | Steep 2 to 4 hours, or overnight chilled |
| Essential oil for massage | Diluted to 1–2% maximum in a carrier oil | Foot or body massage, in the evening |
| Woven roots (fan, fabric) | Sprinkled with water as needed | Cooling the ambient air |
How to prepare vetiver water?
Rinse a small handful of dried roots, place them in a jug of room-temperature or previously boiled and cooled water, and let steep for 2 to 4 hours, or overnight in the refrigerator for a stronger flavor. The same roots can be reused 2 to 3 times before composting.
When and how often to drink it?
Vetiver water is drunk during the day, with no fixed time imposed, especially in hot weather. It is a routine drink rather than a fixed-dose remedy: tradition sets no maximum amount beyond the usual common sense for a steeped drink.
How long can regular use continue?
Vetiver water can accompany the whole hot season with no notion of a mandatory break, unlike the more concentrated herbs on this site. Essential oil, by contrast, is better used in periods, especially for evening massages, with no need for continuous use.
How to dilute the essential oil safely?
Vetiver essential oil, thick and concentrated, should always be diluted in a carrier oil at 1 to 2% maximum before any skin application — never used undiluted. A 2015 study by Saiyudthong and colleagues, published in Natural Product Research, found that rats given 2.5% inhaled vetiver essential oil showed an anxiolytic-like profile comparable to diazepam (see the study on Google Scholar) — a preclinical result that supports vetiver's traditional calming reputation, though it concerns inhalation in animals rather than a human dosing guide, and it is at a similar low-percentage dilution that a few drops suffice for an evening foot or body massage.
What to do about irritation?
Skin irritation after applying diluted essential oil remains rare but possible: always patch-test a small area of skin before wider use. In case of redness or lasting discomfort, stop application and rinse thoroughly.
Precautions
Steeped root water is traditionally very well tolerated, provided food-grade roots, rinsed before use, are chosen. Pure essential oil, by contrast, is best avoided during pregnancy, breastfeeding and in young children without specialist advice, and should never be applied undiluted. For general guidance, see our safety and precautions guide.
Your questions about vetiver dosage
How much vetiver root for a jug of water?
A small handful of dried, rinsed roots is enough for a jug, steeped 2 to 4 hours or overnight chilled. The same roots can be reused two to three times.
How long should vetiver be steeped?
Count on 2 to 4 hours at room temperature, or a full night in the refrigerator for a stronger flavor. The water then takes on a slightly amber tint and a gentle earthy taste.
How do you dilute vetiver essential oil?
At 1 to 2% maximum in a carrier oil before any skin application, for example for an evening foot massage. It should never be applied undiluted to the skin.
Can you drink vetiver water every day in summer?
Yes, this is common traditional use with no notion of a mandatory break, provided you use clean, well-rinsed food-grade roots before steeping.
Is vetiver essential oil suitable for children?
No, it is discouraged as a precaution in young children without specialist advice, as with many concentrated essential oils. Root water remains the most suitable everyday family use.
