How to Store Chitrak: Only the Processed Preparations
This isn't about storing raw root or powder of chitrak, which has no place in a home herb cabinet, but only the classical processed preparations.
Unlike other herbs in the products hub, this article does not cover storing raw powder or root of chitrak: as detailed in how to choose chitrak, raw root is vesicant and toxic, so it never belongs in a home herb cabinet. Only the classical processed preparations — chitrakadi vati, avaleha, bhasma — should be kept on hand, on a practitioner's guidance.
How to store chitrakadi vati
The classical tablets (vati) keep in their sealed original packaging, away from light, heat and moisture, like most compacted Ayurvedic preparations. Once the container is opened, a dry, temperate cupboard is enough; refrigeration is not necessary.
How to store chitrak haritaki avaleha
The medicinal jam (avaleha) combining trikatu/">chitrak and haritaki is a honey- or sugar-based preparation, more sensitive to moisture and temperature swings than a dry tablet. Keep it in its well-sealed original jar, at a stable room temperature, away from direct light.
The special case of bhasma
Bhasma, a medicinal ash obtained through a strict traditional calcination process, in theory keeps for a very long time given its mineral nature, but its preparation, sale and use must remain exclusively supervised by a qualified practitioner — see chitrak dangers for the detail of these reservations.
What research documents about storing herbal preparations
A study by Sharma, Kabra, Kabra and Baghel (2016), published in the Journal of Ayurveda and Integrative Medicine (see the study on Google Scholar), shows that medicinal herb powders and preparations degrade progressively depending on storage conditions — light, moisture and temperature mattering more than the simple passage of time. This general finding applies to processed chitrak preparations as it does to any other herb on this site.
Indicative shelf life by preparation
| Preparation | Storage | Indicative shelf life | Sign of quality loss |
|---|---|---|---|
| Chitrakadi vati (tablets) | Sealed original packaging, dry temperate spot | Per manufacturer's expiry date, generally 18 to 24 months | Crumbling or discolored tablets |
| Chitrak triphala/">haritaki avaleha | Well-sealed original jar, stable temperature | Per manufacturer's instructions, generally 12 to 18 months after opening | Fermentation, unusual smell or texture |
| Bhasma | Airtight original container | Long theoretical shelf life, reserved for supervised use | Not applicable to self-medication |
Precautions
No storage rule makes raw chitrak root or powder safe: whatever the form, a chitrak-based preparation is formally contraindicated during pregnancy and should never be taken without a trained Ayurvedic practitioner's advice. Full precautions appear in chitrak: dangers and side effects and in our safety precautions guide.
Your questions about how to store chitrak
Can raw chitrak root or powder be stored at home?
No. Raw root and powder are vesicant and toxic: they have no place in a home herb cabinet. Only the classical processed preparations (vati, avaleha, bhasma) should be kept, on a practitioner's prescription.
How should chitrakadi vati be stored?
In its well-sealed original packaging, away from light and moisture, in a dry temperate cupboard. No refrigeration is needed.
Does chitrak haritaki avaleha keep like the tablets?
No, this honey- or sugar-based medicinal jam is more sensitive to moisture and temperature swings: keep it in its well-sealed original jar, at a stable room temperature.
How long does a chitrak preparation keep?
As a rough guide, 18 to 24 months for tablets (vati) and 12 to 18 months after opening for the avaleha, per the manufacturer's instructions. Bhasma keeps longer but remains reserved for supervised use.
