A documented adulterant: Ammania buccifera
A study by Jani, Shukla and Harisha, published in 2013 in the journal AYU (34, pp. 406-410), compared the pharmacognostic and phytochemical characters of Bergenia ligulata with those of Ammania buccifera, a plant used as a pashanabheda substitute in parts of Kerala (see the study on Google Scholar). The authors identified two discriminating microscopic markers: rosette crystals, larger in Bergenia ligulata, and the presence of cork tissue (a plant protective layer), present in Bergenia ligulata but absent in Ammania buccifera.
A notable finding of the study: HPTLC chemical analysis showed close Rf (retention factor) values between the two plants, and nearly equivalent total phenol content. In other words, a surface-level chemical analysis does not always suffice to tell the two species apart: microscopic examination remains the more reliable test, one that is well beyond an individual buyer's means.
Why does this confusion exist?
The Sanskrit name "pashanbheda," meaning "stone-breaker," has been applied over the centuries to several different plants depending on the Indian region, based on local availability and similar traditional use rather than rigorous botanical identification. A supplier who mentions only "pashanbheda" with no Latin name allows for no verification at all, while an explicit mention of Bergenia ligulata substantially reduces, without fully eliminating, the risk of receiving a substitute plant like the one documented in Kerala.
