Mantra

Mantra: a sound, syllable or Sanskrit phrase repeated to calm and focus the mind. Discover how to practise this Ayurvedic tool for mental hygiene.

Mantra is traditionally broken down into man- ("to think", the root of manas, the mind) and -tra ("instrument, protection"): literally, an instrument that protects the mind. It is a sound, a syllable or a Sanskrit phrase repeated — aloud, whispered or mentally (japa) — to give the stream of thoughts a stable point of support.

In Ayurveda, mantra belongs to the sattvic dimension of care: it is one of the practices that soothe manas, on a par with meditation or a light diet. The tradition sees in it a subtle vibrational effect; more prosaically, rhythmic repetition slows the breath and keeps the discursive mind occupied — a mechanism close to what meditation research describes, though no specific mantra has demonstrated a distinct effect. The most widely used: Om, regarded as the primordial sound, or the gayatri mantra, a Vedic hymn recited at sunrise.

A concrete example: choose a short mantra, sit comfortably and repeat it mentally for five to ten minutes, returning to the sound each time the mind drifts away. Recitation suits Vata types particularly well, since complete silence can leave them restless.
