Tridosha
Tridosha is the theory of the three doshas — Vata, Pitta, Kapha — the forces that govern body and mind in Ayurveda. Discover their roles.
Tridosha literally means "the three doshas" (tri, three; dosha, that which can fall out of balance). It is Ayurveda’s central theory: three biological forces, derived from the five elements, govern every function of body and mind. Vata (air + ether) governs movement — breathing, circulation, nerve impulses, elimination. Pitta (fire + water) governs transformation — digestion, metabolism, body temperature, intellect. Kapha (water + earth) governs structure — tissues, lubrication, immunity, stability.
Each of us carries all three doshas, but in unique proportions: this is prakriti, the birth constitution. Health, in Ayurveda, is not the absence of symptoms but the dynamic balance of these three forces; illness begins when one of them accumulates beyond its rightful measure — hence the importance of knowing how to recognise and correct a dosha imbalance.
A concrete example: the same windy winter day increases Vata in everyone — cold hands, a scattered mind, lighter sleep. A strongly Vata person will feel it acutely, a Kapha person barely at all. This model serves as a universal reading grid: foods, seasons, times of day, stages of life and emotions are all classified by their effect on each dosha.
