Description
A sound bowl gives you an anchor for attention: you strike it at the start of a session, then follow the tone until silence. It is a useful support for the meditation described in our guide, especially if you find it hard to settle. This bowl, 12.5 cm across and 6.8 cm high, weighing about 635 g, has enough mass for a long, deep resonance.
According to the manufacturer it is cast in a double layer of copper alloy and then hammered, with a black finish and a gold band. It comes with a covered wooden mallet (to strike it or make it sing by rubbing the rim) and a cushion that steadies it and stops it buzzing against the table.
To make it sing, rub the rim with the mallet, evenly and without pressing; it takes a few tries. It is a tool for focus, not a therapy: it does not treat stress or insomnia.
